You never know how it is going to end. You start with a clear idea but you have no idea where it might end up. And for years you think about the end and then finally it comes to you. Usually not what you suspect. It is an amalgam hopefully of the novel and if you are lucky it sums up something of why you wrote the book in the first place. And now A Farewell To Arms has all the different endings Hemingway considered. Do we need this? Sure. Why not.
It is good to see a novel such as Hemingway's WWI summation had a chance to not end with the dying fall he came up with. Many of his endings were very different. Some were soppy. Some were over the top. Some were just too thin. It is good to see that he found the right one between summation and then the dying fall of no summation. Something very new at the time.
And so we have to deal with our own endings. And we hope that when we get to the end something will present itself. Many times it is something that surprises us. And if we are really lucky it might put the whole novel into proper perspective. We can only hope.
